New artist alert! We are delighted to introduce the works of artist Alexander Millar, and to have him on board with us here at Robertson Fine Art.
For those of you who are only just beginning develop your collection, and have yet to come across one of the UK’s top selling artists and his endearing ‘Gadgie’s’, then hopefully this will give you a better insight into why he has been capturing the hearts of many over the past thirty-odd years.
Discussing his childhood, and growing up in the small mining town – Springside, just outside Kilmarnock, Millar paints the picture of a life surrounded by the weird and wonderful characters and the experiences which have only fueled his work. Born in 1960, Millar did not have the easiest upbringing, and after leaving school and tackling a number of jobs, he finally fled to Newcastle and began his career as a completely self taught artist. His approach is humorous and light hearted, much like his paintings, but laced with hints of the trials and tribulations he has had to overcome in order to be where he is now. He is honest and funny, and that speaks out in every piece he creates.
Now nicknamed the ‘Gadgie’ artist, it is clear to see Millar is not only passionate about what he produces, but that he has worked incredibly hard to get that reputation for himself. His paintings portray the honest working men, their doting wives and mischievous kids, back in a time which is easy for so many to relate to.
Alex says, “People ask if I will ever stop painting the gadgies, but its my family, my childhood and where I grew up. It’s what makes me.”
His success since his early days has been outstanding, with countless sell out exhibitions and works now in galleries around the world,hanging next to some of the greats – he has become one of the most sought after artists by collectors and connoisseurs alike.
